1 Peter 3:15 but in your hearts honor [set apart / sanctify] Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you;
Philippians 1:15-16 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. (16) The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks for a reason for the hope that is in you.
Two things here: if you are going to make a defense to anyone who “asks” it implies that someone is asking.
- Why would someone ask?
- Could it be because in setting apart Christ as Lord of your life you begin to walk differently than the world?
- And if you walk differently than the world it will be noticeable?
- Remember we said that if you have had a graceful, faithful, saving encounter with the risen Lord, your life will change: a change you can’t hide from yourself or others?
What is our hope? The confident assurance of our eternal salvation in Christ Jesus.
What is the reason for our hope? The gospel; the perfect sinless life, sacrificial, atoning crucifixion, and the hell, death and grave defeating resurrection.
Therefore, you defend the reason for your hope by defending the gospel.
Now back to our original point: if no one is asking [1 Peter 3:15] what does that say about the life you are living and how can you do what you are put here for [Philippians 1:16]?
