The Dark Ages, Part II

The Dark Ages

Welcome to the Dark Ages:  where you either fall in line behind the mob or face the consequences.  The mob claims to be liberal while behaving as anything but. The definition of liberalism is tolerance of differing ideas. Yet this mob exists to enforce conformity of thought [we tolerate you as long as you affirm what we affirm] and to destroy anyone who differs from its worldview. The intolerance of tolerance is its calling card [as D. A. Carson would say].

Each week seems to bring another incident with greater frequency and intensity.  We all know that self-employed florists, photographers and wedding cake makers cannot exercise their 1st Amendment Right to speak or refrain from speaking any longer.  They must affirm and celebrate with their talents the very things they oppose or be punished by government sanctions.

You are no longer free to refrain from speaking when it comes to the mob’s demands of your allegiance.  And, you are no longer free to speak about what you believe and expect tolerance and diversity in a “free society”.  Just ask HGTV stars David and Jason Benham, Mozilla –Firefox’s CEO Brendan Eich or Pasadena, CA health director Eric Walsh.  Not to mention sports stars who disagree publically with their peer’s lifestyles.  You can’t speak out for fear of being on probation and not allowed to participate in team functions until after completion of  “training”.

Even on college campuses, the last liberal bastion of freedom, it is unacceptable to have a view that is different than the mob’s.  In March, University of California-Santa Barbara women’s studies professor Mireille Miller-Young attacked a 16-year-old holding an anti-abortion sign in the campus’ “free speech zone” (formerly known as America). Though she was charged with theft, battery and vandalism, Miller-Young remains unrepentant and still has her job. Yet, the Benham brothers, Eich and Walsh are on probation or gone for speaking out on traditional family values as defined in the Bible.

I write this not as a social / political rant but to reinforce my assertion that our day is coming.  We will get the opportunity [blessing according to the bible] to stand up for what we believe in our lifetime – with the threat of public and possible state backlash for holding a belief different than the mob.  As Martin Luther said; “Here I stand, I can do no other.” You better be sure what you believe, and why you believe it.

As the mob destroys people’s lives, I need to stop and ask a basic question: What happens when they come for me? If history is any guide, that’s how these things usually end.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out– Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out– Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out– Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak for me.

~ Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the cowardice of German intellectuals
