He [Isaac] said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Genesis 22:7b
“Where is the lamb?”
The entirety of the Old Testament can be summarized by Isaac’s curious question in this passage. From Genesis to Malachi, the question that undergirds all the historical stories, the literary genres, and the poetry and songs is the question Isaac asked: “Where is the lamb for the sacrifice?” The Old Testament points forward to a future sacrifice when the Father would slay His only Son—the Lamb of God.
Humanity could not offer this sacrifice; we are sinful. Instead, the atoning sacrifice had to come from above.
