I write these things that you may know….

Knowing that you are Christ’s or the ability to know came up several times yesterday.  1 John is a great book to read on this subject.  Some of the points John brings out for your reflection:

1 John 2:1-6 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (2) He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. (3) And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. (4) Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, (5) but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: (6) whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

1. By this [if we keep his commandments] we KNOW that we have come to know him.

2. By this [if we say we abide in Him and we walk in the same way He walked] we KNOW that we are in Him.

1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.

1. Because we love the brothers [we KNOW] we have passed out of death into life.

1 John 3:24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

1. By this [whoever keeps his commandants] we KNOW the He abides in us.

1 John 4:16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

1. If we abide in love we abide in God and [we KNOW] he abides in us.

1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.

John writes these things in – 1 John 2, 3, and 4 so that you may KNOW!  KNOW what?

  1. That we have come to know him.
  2. That we are in him.
  3. That we have passed from life to death.
  4. That he abides in us.

How do you know? What is the evidence or proof in you life that allows you to know?

  1. If we keep his commandants.
  2. If we walk [live] in the same way he walked.
  3. If we love our brothers.
  4. If we abide in love.

Keep, love, walk and abide.

If your heart attitude is always striving for these things*, if this is what defines you:  you can KNOW!

*Remember, doing these things is not what makes you righteous, but is the proof you have Christ’s righteousness by faith.  The proof and evidence of the fruit wrought by the Holy Spirit in your life is impossible to hide, from yourself or others.

1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
