Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:26-27 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness… (27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Genesis 2:7 then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Do you believe that? I mean really believe that? If you do, that puts you in the minority.
According to a new Pew Research Center analysis, six-in-ten Americans (60%) say that “humans and other living things have evolved over time,” while a third (33%) reject the idea of evolution, saying that “humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.” So I guess 7% were undecided.
That 60% includes American adults over 18. That means that only 33% of American adults over 18 believe in something like creation / intelligent design. When the research was limited to the “religious only” [whatever that means] the percentage only improved to 34.5% believe in creation / intelligent design. Nice!
Here’ the rub. No matter what non-Christians choose to beat us over the head with [evolution/hell/works/same sex marriage/homosexuality/submission/leadership/etc.] it basically comes back to the same thing. Those issues are not the root. The root is GENESIS 1:1.
I believe in a sovereign Creator who is Lord and Definer of all. Everything in the universe — the planet, the laws of physics, the laws of morality, you, me — everything was created by Another, was designed by Another, was given value and definition by Another. God is Creator and Lord, and so He is ultimate. That means we are created and subjects, and therefore derivative and dependent. God sets the terms in His word. Whether we like the terms or not, does not change the terms.
“Therefore, we are not free to create meaning or value. We have only two options. We can discover the true value assigned by the Creator and revealed in His Word and obey; or we can rebel against that meaning.
It really is that simple. So when someone comes at you with the Christian deal breaker of the day: Don’t take the bait. Take them back to Genesis 1:1 and ask them how that lines up with what they just asked you. How they answer that, will determine the rest of the conversation.
