The Reformers denied the doctrine of Papal infallibility among others and said: scripture alone is the source of the gospel of Jesus Christ that is received by faith alone, by God’s grace alone. The Bible does not stand apart from God, but is the instrument of God by which he reveals himself for salvation through faith in Christ alone.
Therefore, when Martin Luther was on trial for his stand against the Roman Catholic Church at the Diet of Worms, and he was asked to recant his belief in “sola scriptura” and yield to the authority of the Pope in matters of doctrine, he could say:
“Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason—I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other—my conscience is captive to the word of God. . . . God help me! Here I stand, I can do no other.”
I am afraid the day may come in our lifetime when we have to defend our stance against a lost and dying world publicly like Martin Luther.
Rick Warren: On Piers Morgan Live last week, Morgan asked Pastor Rick Warren whether he thought Christians’ views or his views on homosexuality and same-sex marriage would ever “evolve”. Warren replied NO, adding, “I fear the disapproval of God more than I fear your disapproval or the disapproval of society. I cannot change what God has said. I believe the infallibility of the Holy Scriptures”. Hats off to Pastor Warren!
Our day may come.
Think about abortion, gay marriage and preaching against it [hate speech] from the pulpit. What will you do when they come and say you have to do this or that or else [as they all ready have in some places]. Will the word of God be sufficient for you to say “here I stand – I can do no other” or will you bend to the lie “did God really say?”
Will you believe that if you seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you? Don’t worry what they say or do to you tomorrow because of how you stand with Christ today: Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Your view of scripture matters!
